Dearey Launches Election Campaign

Senator Mark Dearey this morning formally launched his election campaign at McAteers Food House in Clanbrassil Street in Dundalk, with a commitment to do everything in his power to help small and medium size enterprises in the constituency and to attract strategic investment into the region.

“Investors seeking a home for good business proposals need to know that they have a supportive political environment, a competitive cost base a well educated work force and a can do mentality. I believe among the candidates I am uniquely qualified to work and ensure that all of these factors are in place. Furthermore I have a strong sense of how Louth and East Meath can be big winners as the economy moves away from oil dependency and begins to use renewable in increasing amounts. We, of all constituencies in Ireland can be the one to benefit most from what the Confederation of British Industry estimate will be a global market worth five trillion euro by 2015 in low carbon goods and services. Our third level institute and a number of blue chip businesses in the constituency are leading the way and it is critical that politicians understand the opportunities and the dynamics of job creation. Politics has a critical role in ensuring the jobs of the future. We need to put a halt to the brain drain that has started again as our young people seek employment elsewhere. Only if they believe that high skilled and well paid jobs will be coming on stream will they stay or be persuaded to return”

Turning to the question of political reform Senator Dearey said “The other key message that’s coming across loud and clear on the doors is that people have lost faith in politics. So many people do not know how to cast their vote while others are being persuaded by what I believe to be dangerous proposals that will leave Ireland isolated and broke. This election campaign is an opportunity to begin to restore some trust and I view the conversations I am having on the doors, and I have had thousands of them already, as a way of giving people hope that there is a brand of politics out there that can be trusted and that has integrity.”

Concluding Senator Dearey said, “Over the course of the campaign I will not be making huge promises or indulging in auction politics. The 2002 and 2007 elections were essentially bought elections with public spending jumping massively in the months preceding each election. Those public spending hikes are the cause of the deficit that have us in so much trouble now. I intend to be honest but also hopeful in what I say in the coming weeks and I am happy that people will cast their vote on that basis.
