Senator Mark Dearey has welcomed the decision by Irish rail to permit bicycles on off peak commuter trains.

“At last trains are now more cycle friendly. I am delighted at the announcement that cyclists are to be allowed take their bikes for free on the commuter trains to and from Dublin for the first time," Senator Dearey said.

”Cyclists can also now book bicycle spaces online for Intercity services to Dublin and Belfast for €6 per journey. Investment in leisure cycling routes in Drogheda and along the Boyne Valley has the potential to help generate much needed revenue for our tourism industry, supporting our local restaurants and accommodation providers. I hope this initiative will encourage tourists and visitors to come and visit us, whether it's for a weekend, or a day outing."

The Government’s National Cycling policy puts a significant emphasis on integrating cycling and rail travel as sustainable modes of transport.

Senator Dearey concluded saying,

"Taking your bike on off-peak trains is the norm in Europe and will be a big assistance to Dublin commuters working outside the peak hours. These new measures are a small but positive step toward building a strong cycling culture in Ireland and something the Greens have long been fighting for."
